The time is now to protect our planet from climate change.

What is Kay Pacha Initiative?

The ancient Incans believed that the universe was divided into three realms, or pachas. The Kay Pacha was the physical realm or “This World,” where all people, animals, and plants existed. Today, our Kay Pacha faces a number of threats and emergencies arising from climate change.

Kay Pacha Initiative's mission is to mobilize volunteers to combat climate change issues locally and around the globe. We partner with existing organizations in locations impacted by climate change and send volunteers to support and participate in projects geared towards repairing and rebuilding our fragile planet. We also are involved locally in our home base of New York City, and organize monthly volunteer events focused on protecting our parks, beaches and local environment.

Does Climate Change Affect You?

Yes. Climate change is considered one of the most immediate threats to the survival of the human race. If you live on this planet, climate change affects you.

According to NASA, the main cause of global warming at this stage in history is human beings. The most direct cause can be attributed to carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions that are warming our oceans faster than ever. Warming oceans means loss of ice in areas like Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, which in turn leads to rising sea levels. It is only a matter of time before we start seeing catastrophic flooding of our coastal cities.

In addition to rising sea levels, our oceans are seeing record quantities of plastic dumped into it each year…17.6 billion pounds to be exact. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch alone includes an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of trash. This plastic is destroying fish populations and marine life, and in turn it ends up in the food that we eat.

On land, the rainforests of this planet are experiencing record deforestation rates, from fires in the Amazon by logging companies to the clearcutting of Indonesian jungles for palm oil plantations. This deforestation not only affects the safety of wildlife in these regions but also the oxygen levels we as humans need for clean air to breathe.

We are also currently witnessing dramatic shifts in weather patterns: larger and more frequent hurricanes, wildfires, storms and droughts that affect local communites, food supplies and wildlife. If we don’t start taking action to combat climate change all of these issues will continue to get worse. Climate experts warn that by 2050 climate change could represent a near to mid-term existential threat to human civilization.
